I’m unfamiliar with Salty Iguana, but I have one of those spots too. This was such a beautiful tribute to not just a place, but the thing(s) a place can represent! Thank you for sharing!
Beautifully written Lucy. Our family was also regulars at Salty and our daughter, Meg (who you referenced in this) worked at Salty for over 25 years! Personally I can’t imaging seeing all those colorful Iguanas on the walls nearly every day for that long but she loved it - like a 2nd home for her. Most of all she loved the people. It was always the people for her. For me - always seeing people I knew and of course - the iguana dip. Still in denial that I’ll never sit in the bar again chatting with family friends and regulars, munching on chips and that oh-so-healthy iquana dip. It’s a sad time in PV.
We lived in Kansas City for 7 years (almost 9 years ago 🤯- can’t believe we’ve been gone longer than we were there). I don’t think I’ve been to The Salty Iguana, but I read until the end and teared all the way up.
Lucy, I love the way you write. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, The Salty Iguana, and especially your sweet cousin, Jake.
Lucy, this may be your best work ever. I’m not from there, but everyone has a salty iguana, and it’s so painful when it’s gone.
